The "America Line Depot Monument", Bahnhof Ebstorf, Germany, is the greatest and last remaining historically listed depot at the America Line operated since 15.April 1873 in Germany. "America Line" is the official colloquial name of DB KBS ( Deutsche Bahn Kurs-Buch-Strecke ) 116 Uelzen-Langwedel and KBS 305 Stendal-Uelzen.
Col. Reb Custer took over the restoration and preservation of this most important part of European-American migration history for ancestors family research efforts, Country Rail-Roads© friends, and establish a living history museum according to ICOM ethics for the America Line.
Almost all emigrants - more than 4 million by numbers - from Prussia, Germany, the Eastern states of Poland, Russia, the Baltic states, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria and a lot more countries had to ride the America Line from Berlin on the direct railway line to Bremen, Bremerhaven, Emden, Wilhelmshaven sea ports and connecting tracks to Hamburg Ballinstadt.
At Berlin Ruhleben station the migrants had to go through special US and Canadian immigration interviews and compulsory health checks. If considered useful and adaptable to live in America and healthy enough to survive the voyage, emigration agents of the shipping lines sold them combined tickets for train and ship.
Emigration trains usually were freight trains, never appeared in a schedule, departed at Berlin in the evening hours and paused halfway on their route at the Ebstorf depot during the day to take water and coal for the steam engines and cater and shelter the passengers. Passenger express on schedule were overtaking, freight trains delivering goods from overseas and fresh fish from the North Sea to the markets at Berlin, Breslau, Leipzig, Dresden, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest were passing by in the opposite direction.
America line train traffic today can be viewed live on the Ebstorf train cam, and the "Zugfinder"-link shows passenger train positions on destinations on the America Line from Stendal-Uelzen and Uelzen-Bremen. Documentation of history is displayed inside the Depot Monument at events, and during opening hours on special request.
By now, we are restoring the America Line Depot, so pilgrims on the bypassing "Via Scandinavica Jakobsweg" and ADFC "Heideweg"or "Auswandererweg"travel bikers can get overnight stay at the museum, and American ancestors families, railfans, monument supporters, and contributors can ride the America Line again and are very welcome!
